What Police Gear Do Law Enforcement Officers Need?

Whether wearing plain clothes or in uniform, police officers carry various equipment in their line of duty. Those wearing the proper uniform handle more equipment compared to personnel in civilian clothing. For example, special operation teams like SWAT must wear full-body armour with a helmet, shield, and safety vest due to their work.

For law enforcement officers, the same principle applies. Below, you will find the police gear that makes the job safe and effective.

Apparel

Police officers are required to wear a uniform that is functional and sturdy. More often, police apparel has multiple pockets to store safety items. Whether it is a tactical shirt, combat shirt, field shirt or army shirt, appropriate apparel will suit the environment one is assigned to.

If you are a police officer working on an outdoors assignment, tactical shirts that are lightweight, fast-drying, moisture-wicking and providing UV protection are preferred. The apparel must allow the officer to perform effectively while being able to withstand extreme conditions.

Police Badges and Insignia

To heighten the overall look of the police uniform, a police officer should possess the necessary police badges and insignia at all times while on duty. Law enforcement officers can be appropriately identified while wearing the badges.

Cameras and Surveillance

In police enforcement, a body-worn camera is issued to record events wherein the police officer is involved. These wearable cameras are typically worn on the torso of the body. Law enforcement officers use body cameras to gather footage at crime scenes or interact with the public.

Radios and Communication Devices

Portable radios are designed to help police officers communicate with one another. These devices are encrypted so that eavesdroppers are prevented from listening to the messages. Surveillance earpieces, headsets, megaphones, and other public safety communication devices are used during emergencies, when cell towers are overloaded and during power outages.

Defence Sprays

Different types of self-defence items are necessary to keep a police officer safe in case they contact an aggressor. If they do not have a weapon, they can carry around a defence spray to protect themselves against a threat. Defence sprays are often used in crowd control, policing, self-dense, and riot control.

Flashlights

Law enforcement officers use tactical flashlights in dark environments. Many flashlights can be attached to a weapon to check surroundings or illuminate a path. Under specific circumstances, they can help police officers aim at a weapon while identifying threats.

Holsters and Duty Gear

Gun holsters are an important part of police gear. A holster is attached to the belt, and it securely holds the firearm of a police officer. When not in use, it conceals the firearm and prevents others from grabbing the gun.

Duty gear is used to protect the police officer and prevent body injury during an altercation. Bulletproof vests and ballistic gear are made of materials that can absorb or reduce the impact of a fire armed ammunition or shrapnel from an explosion.

Handcuffs and Restraints

One of the essential pieces of equipment a police officer must carry is handcuffs. To prevent a suspect from fighting back, escaping, or destroying evidence, a pair of handcuffs are used.

Law enforcement officers have sworn an oath to serve and protect. Their uniforms, duty gear, holsters, badges, body armour, flashlights all help them work more effectively. While on duty or off, they must possess innovative and feature-rich police gear to ensure public safety and welfare.
