5 Factors to Consider When Designing a T-Shirt

Designing a t-shirt is fun, but designing a good t-shirt is hard.

Custom t-shirts are all the rage, whether you’re a company trying to grow your brand or you’re just someone that likes expressing their fashion sense. If you’ve never done it before, then you might not know all of the things to consider when designing a t-shirt.

In this post, we’re going to tell you 5 factors to consider so you can create the best tee possible.

  1. Size Matters

When you’re uploading a graphic on a custom shirt printing site, you’ll be given a set amount of space to work with. Just because you have it doesn’t mean you should use it all.

If the design is too big, it’ll come off the press looking stretched out, so try shrinking it so that there’s plenty of space. This is especially important if you’re doing a big run of shirts in all different sizes.

  1. Placement

You should always put a lot of thought into the placement of the design on the shirt. If you’ve done a good job with sizing, you should have a bit of room to move it up and down the front of the shirt. Most people prefer having their designs at chest level, but you can break these norms a little bit.

One thing you should never do is place your design on the belly of the shirt. Creating mock-ups is a great way to get an idea of what your design will look like in different positions on the shirt.

  1. Color Combo

Color is an important part of any design, but the colors you choose will impact the cost and production time of the t-shirt. From a design standpoint, you need to create a contrast between the t-shirt itself and the design. A black design on a black shirt, obviously, isn’t going to cut through.

You can always follow your gut when it comes to color combinations, but you can also learn a bit more about how different colors work together here. As for price, the more colors you use in the design, the more expensive the t-shirt will be.

  1. Readable Text

You don’t want your text to be too flowery or you’ll run the risk of it being unreadable. You also don’t want to put too much text on a t-shirt because it’ll detract from the overall design. Settle on a short phrase to go with your design and try to strike the right balance between style and message.

  1. Keep It Simple

Designing a t-shirt doesn’t have to be complicated, but a lot of people try to do too much. Keep your design simple and it’ll be more effective.

You can find loads of examples of great t-shirt designs online, but it’s important to have originality too. Take these tips to heart, but follow your gut as well.

Designing a T-Shirt Is All About Having Fun

Having fun while designing a t-shirt is the name of the game. Let your personality out as much as you can, but be careful not to overdo it. A good custom t-shirt service will be able to hold your hand through the process and answer any questions you have.
